Overview

Highlights

Add Maddens Falls near Sydney, New South Wales to your Aussie Bucket List if you enjoy hiking, nature and exploring Australia's great outdoors. Enjoy scenic waterfall views at Maddens Falls lookout near Helensburgh, a 1.3km return walk from the carpark.

Take the easy Maddens Falls walk to the lookout for a view of the waterfall dropping from Maddens Creek to the pools below. The short and easy walking track is a great one for walking with children. It's also ideal for birdwatchers so don't forget your binoculars - look for local residents like honeyeaters, red wattlebirds and golden whistlers. Tree frogs, brown froglets and banjo frogs are often heard too, walk quietly to increase your chances of spotting wildlife.

When you reach the falls, admire picturesque vegetation at the falls’ base. Colourful with acacias, native river roses and lush, sprawling ferns, it’s a pretty place to visit during spring when the flowers are out or in April when the falls will be at their fullest. See if you can spot the rare fern-leaf grevillea with its red ‘toothbrush-like’ flowers.

When you’re done gazing at the falls, head back along the track to the picnic table for a tasty lunch or afternoon tea.

Important Information

Guidelines

  • Always do some research before heading out for your journey. Visit the parks website for the most up to date information.
  • Always enjoy waterfalls from trails and marked viewing points. Do not climb over barriers as cliff edges and slippery surfaces may cause injury or death.
  • Only swim where permitted. Don’t jump from cliff edges into water bodies.
  • Swimming near or under waterfalls can be dangerous due to strong currents, submerged hidden rock ledges and other dangers. The force of a waterfall can be incredibly strong and unfortunately, many people have drowned. Follow warning signs and take caution.
  • Ensure you observe all safety signs. Always stay on the marked tracks where possible. Never climb fences, they are there for your own safety.
  • Wear suitable footwear and always ensure to bring a hat and sunscreen to protect yourself from the elements when exploring Australia.
  • Plan ahead and ensure to take enough food and water for your journey.
  • Please consider the environment, take your rubbish with you or place in the bins provided. We want to ensure these beautiful places are still here for our future generations to enjoy.
  • Please do not feed the wildlife.
  • Leave nothing but footprints. Take nothing but memories.
