Overview

Highlights

The Main Range Track is considered one of Australia's great day walks. Above the tree-line in the alpine area of Kosciuszko there is a 22 kilometre loop walk which begins and ends at Charlotte Pass. The track takes walkers across the Snowy River, up over Mt Carruthers towards the summit of Kosciuszko itself and then by Rawson's Pass and down the hill back towards the starting point.

Add Main Range Track in the Snowy Mountains to your Aussie Bucket List if you enjoy hiking and exploring Australia's great outdoors. The best time to do this walk is between December and March when the wild flowers are in bloom.

Important Information

Guidelines

  • Always do some research before heading out for your journey. Visit the parks website for up to date information on the current conditions.
  • Alpine areas present special safety issues. Conditions can be extreme and may change rapidly, particularly in winter. It’s important to be prepared and find out how to stay safe in alpine areas.
  • Ensure to check the relevant website for any updates relating to any warnings that may be issued for the area, admission prices, opening and closing times.
  • Wear suitable footwear and ensure to bring a hat and sunscreen to protect yourself from the elements.
  • Plan ahead and ensure to take enough food and water for your journey.
  • Always stay on the marked tracks where possible. Never climb fences, they are there for your own safety.
  • Please consider the environment, take your rubbish with you or place in the bins provided. We want to ensure these beautiful places are still here for our future generations to enjoy.
  • Ensure to let a responsible adult know of your plans and report back into them once you have finished exploring for the day.
  • Take advantage of toilets where provided, including Rawson Pass. If you've got to go, preferably plan to bag your toilet waste, especially at high use areas without toilets.
  • National park and camping fees apply, check the parks website for bookings and further details.
