Overview

Highlights

The Crystal Falls area features a mass of rock pools, rapids and small cascades that fall away into a spectacular and large waterfall. The area can only be reached by trekking the iconic Jatbula Trail. Located within Nitmiluk National Park this 62 kilometre one way trail from Katherine Gorge (Nitmiluk) to Leliyn / Edith Falls, takes between four to five days to complete. Bookings are essential.

19.5 kilometres along the Jatbula Trail, Crystal Falls is the second campsite reached on the trail. Crystal Falls are an inviting backdrop to the campsites, with many of the sites shaded by trees and the sounds of the cascades inviting you to cool off, in the deep crystal clear pools. Crystal Falls flows all year round as it is fed by nearby swamps and springs. Enjoy an amazing sunset from whilst taking a dip in one of the refreshing pools.

Toilets and an Emergency Call Device (ECD) are located close by to campsites.

Important Information

Guidelines

  • Always do some research before heading out for your journey. Visit the parks website for up to date information on the current conditions. Ensure to check for any updates relating to any warnings that may be issued for the area, and check for the opening and closing times.
  • Ensure you observe all safety signs, and be aware that whenever you are near water in the NT, there is a risk of crocs! Crocodile warning signs and Crocodile Management Zones are not found everywhere.
  • Always enjoy waterfalls from trails and marked viewing points. Do not climb over barriers as cliff edges and slippery surfaces may cause injury or death.
  • Only swim where permitted. Don’t jump from cliff edges into water bodies.
  • Swimming near or under waterfalls can be dangerous due to strong currents, submerged hidden rock ledges and other dangers. The force of a waterfall can be incredibly strong and unfortunately, many people have drowned. Follow warning signs and take caution.
  • Wear suitable footwear and always ensure to bring a hat and sunscreen to protect yourself from the elements when exploring the Northern Territory.
  • Plan ahead and ensure to take enough food and water for your journey.
  • Always stay on the marked tracks where possible. Never climb fences, they are there for your own safety.
  • Please consider the environment, take your rubbish with you or place in the bins provided. We want to ensure these beautiful places are still here for our future generations to enjoy.
  • Fees may apply. See parks website for more details.
  • Do not feed the wildlife.
  • Leave nothing but footprints. Take nothing but memories.
