All About

Bald Head Trail

Bald Head Trail: The Ultimate Ridge-Walk Adventure in Albany

Walking trail: Grade 4 | 12.5km return hike | 4-6 hour return

DANGER: Sheer cliffs. One slip could be fatal—serious injury or death may result from walking near the edge. Keep to the track. Supervise children closely.

If you are looking for the most spectacular coastal hike in Western Australia, the Bald Head Trail in Torndirrup National Park is the undisputed heavyweight champion. This rugged, 12.5km return journey traverses the narrow Flinders Peninsula, offering 360-degree views of the Great Southern Ocean and King George Sound. It is a challenging, bucket-list hike that rewards every drop of sweat with world-class scenery.

The Bald Head Experience

Often compared to the dramatic cliffs of Ireland or Scotland, Bald Head is famous for its "rollercoaster" ridge-line path that hugs the spine of the peninsula.

  • Spectacular Vistas: On one side, you have the calm, turquoise waters of King George Sound; on the other, the wild, crashing swells of the Southern Ocean.
  • The "Moonscape": As you reach the end of the peninsula, the lush coastal heath gives way to a dramatic, wind-swept granite landscape that feels like another planet.
  • Whale Watching (Winter/Spring): If you’re hiking between June and October, keep your eyes on the horizon. This trail offers some of the best land-based whale watching in Australia as Humpbacks and Southern Rights migrate past the coast.

Essential Visitor Info (2026)

  • Location: Torndirrup National Park, Albany (approx. 15 minutes from the Albany town centre).
  • Distance: 12.5km Return (allow 4–6 hours).
  • Grade: Grade 4 (Difficult). This is a strenuous hike with constant steep ascents and descents over sand and rock. A high level of fitness is required.
  • Facilities: There are basic toilets at the car park (near Misery Beach), but no water or facilities on the trail itself.

National Park Fees: A standard WA National Park entry fee applies.

Safety & Gear Tips

  • Water is Life: There is zero shade on this trail. Carry at least 3 litres of water per person, even on cool days.
  • The Wind: The wind can be incredibly fierce along the ridge. Pack a windbreaker and secure your hat!
  • Footwear: Sturdy hiking boots with good grip are essential, as the granite sections can be slippery, especially when damp.
  • Dieback Awareness: Use the boot-cleaning stations at the trailhead. This helps protect Albany’s unique flora from the devastating Jarrah Dieback disease.

Travel Tips

  • Start Early: Aim to hit the trail by 7:00 am. Not only will you beat the midday heat, but you’ll also have a better chance of seeing local kangaroos and echidnas along the path.
  • Misery Beach: After your hike, head down to the adjacent Misery Beach (once voted Australia's Best Beach) for a well-earned dip in the icy southern waters.
