Cape Keraudren Coastal Reserve – Pilbara, Western Australia

Located 150 kilometres north of Port Hedland and just 13 kilometres west of the Great Northern Highway via the Cape Keraudren Access Road, the Cape Keraudren Coastal Reserve is a hidden gem in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Spanning over 4,800 hectares, this coastal reserve is a nature-based destination where rugged beauty, cultural heritage, and tranquillity combine to create the perfect off-grid getaway.

A Nature-Based Coastal Escape

Cape Keraudren Coastal Reserve is renowned for its untouched landscapes and peaceful atmosphere. It’s a favourite destination for travellers seeking fishing, crabbing, birdwatching, and quiet days by the sea. With its low-key facilities and commitment to environmental preservation, the reserve offers a truly authentic experience of the Pilbara coast.

Visitors are greeted by sweeping ocean views, pristine tidal creeks, and sandy stretches of coastline that feel far removed from the bustle of everyday life. Whether you’re casting a line, exploring the tidal flats, or simply relaxing at your campsite, Cape Keraudren is all about reconnecting with nature.

Camping and Facilities

Camping at Cape Keraudren is a back-to-basics experience. The reserve does not provide electricity, making it ideal for those who enjoy off-grid, self-sufficient travel. Campers are encouraged to bring their own supplies, including food, fuel, and drinking water.

A non-potable water supply is available at the entrance near the pay station, but this water is not suitable for drinking. The nearest drinking water is located at Pardoo Roadhouse, approximately 13 kilometres east at the intersection of the Cape Keraudren Access Road and the Great Northern Highway.

Camping fees apply and are payable on arrival at the entrance. The low-impact approach ensures the natural environment and cultural heritage of the reserve are preserved for future generations.

Cultural and Environmental Significance

The reserve holds significant Aboriginal heritage sites and plays an important role in maintaining the cultural and ecological balance of the region. Managed by the Shire of East Pilbara since 1985, the area has been deliberately kept low-key, with minimal disturbance to the environment. This makes Cape Keraudren one of the most authentic and unspoiled nature-based reserves in Western Australia.

Flora and fauna thrive in this environment, with tidal creeks supporting mangroves, fish, crabs, and migratory bird species. Visitors are asked to tread carefully, respect cultural sites, and leave no trace.
