Lake Bumbunga
Lake Bumbunga, South Australia: Walk Across a Shimmering Pink Salt Lake
Located just under two hours north of Adelaide in Lochiel, Lake Bumbunga is one of South Australia’s most accessible and striking pink salt lakes. Known for its shifting hues ranging from soft bubblegum pink to magenta and crisp white, this natural phenomenon offers unforgettable photo ops and a perfect stopover en-route to the Clare Valley.
South Australia’s Most Accessible Pink Lake
Spanning three massive salt pans along Highway 1 in the small town of Lochiel, Lake Bumbunga is a breathtaking natural spectacle. Derived from the local Parnpangka Indigenous term meaning "rain water lake," this salt lake has produced commercial salt since the late 19th century and is now famous nationwide for its vibrant, surreal color palette.
Why Is Lake Bumbunga Pink?
The lake's signature pink shade is caused by high salinity combined with Dunaliella salina—a salt-loving microalgae that produces red pigments (beta-carotene) in response to intense sunlight and warm temperatures. Depending on the season, water levels, and time of day, Lake Bumbunga shifts dramatically between pastel pink, deep magenta, glowing yellow-orange, and bright white.
What to See & Do at Lake Bumbunga
Walk the Salt Crust: When water levels are low, step out onto the crunchy white-and-pink shoreline to capture reflection shots against the wide horizon.
Spot the 'Loch Eel Monster': Keep an eye out along the edge of the lake for the whimsical "Loch Eel Monster"—a quirky local landmark constructed from recycled rubber tires that has resided in the lake bed since the 1970s.
Combine with Clare Valley: Located just 25 minutes from the world-class Clare Valley wine region, Lake Bumbunga makes the ultimate stopover before a afternoon of Riesling tastings and farm-to-table dining.

Aussie Bucket List Pro-Tips
- Never Drive on the Lake: The salt crust may look firm, but vehicles quickly break through into thick, corrosive mud below. Stick strictly to walking on foot from designated parking areas.
- Bring Water & Footwear Protection: Bring old closed-toe shoes or sturdy water shoes—the salt crystals can be sharp underfoot. Pack plenty of fresh water to rinse off dried salt crust after your walk.
- Check Recent Photos First: Lake color varies depending on recent rainfall. Check recent social media geotags or Google review photos prior to your drive to gauge the current water levels and color intensity.
