All About

Nawi Cove at Barangaroo

Walking trail: Grade 4 | 14km return hike | 5-6 hour return

Located at Barangaroo, Nawi Cove offers a surprisingly tranquil escape right in the heart of Sydney Harbour. Named after the traditional Aboriginal bark canoes (nawi) used by the local Gadigal people, this picturesque sandstone‑lined cove feels like a quiet harbour hideout — yet it’s only minutes from the city’s CBD.

We highly recommend walking along the newly built boardwalk along the promenade at Barangaroo, and following it all the way around the waters edge.

Why Visit Nawi Cove

  • Scenic Harbour Views — The cove’s sandstone amphitheatre and open lawn make it the perfect spot to take in calm water vistas and skyline reflections.
  • Cultural Significance — Nawi Cove sits on land deeply connected to the Gadigal people, reflecting an enduring relationship with the water and traditional nawi canoes.
  • Urban Wilderness — Despite being in one of Sydney’s most urban precincts, the Reserve is planted with more than 75,000 native trees and shrubs, creating a green, peaceful headland.
  • Versatile Venue — With its natural amphitheatre, native planting and open lawn, Nawi Cove is a popular venue for photography, filming and small-scale events.

Why It’s on the Aussie Bucket List

Nawi Cove embodies the perfect union of city and nature. It’s a calm sanctuary tucked into Sydney’s harbourfront, blending ancient cultural stories, native ecology and architectural beauty. Whether you're after a peaceful place to think, a photogenic spot by the water, or a quiet corner for a small event, Nawi Cove is both a hidden retreat and a symbol of Sydney’s deep connection to its Indigenous heritage.
