Nethercote Falls: The Sapphire Coast’s Hidden Cascades
Walking trail: 1.6km return hike | 0.5 - 1 hour return
DANGER: Sheer cliffs and waterfalls. One slip could be fatal—serious injury or death may result from walking near the edge. Keep to the track. Supervise children closely.
Hidden within the lush wilderness of the Yambulla State Forest on the NSW Sapphire Coast, Nethercote Falls is a breathtaking natural wonder that rewards those who prefer the path less traveled. Located just a short drive from Pambula and Eden, this spectacular waterfall and deep rock pool system offer a serene alternative to the coastal beaches, making it a "must-tick" for any nature lover's Aussie Bucket List.
The Nethercote Falls Experience
The beauty of Nethercote Falls lies in its rugged, untouched atmosphere. The falls flow over ancient rock faces into a large, deep basin surrounded by dramatic cliffs and temperate rainforest.
- The Main Pool: The swimming hole at the base of the falls is impressively large and deep. The water is crisp and refreshing—the ultimate reward after a hike on a warm summer day.
- The Upper Cascades: For those with a bit of adventurous spirit, there are smaller rock pools and cascades located further up the creek, offering quieter spots to soak in the surroundings.
- A Natural Amphitheatre: The towering rock walls create a sense of seclusion and incredible acoustics, perfect for listening to the native birdlife and the roar of the falls after a recent rainfall.
Essential Visitor Info
- Location: Back Nethercote Rd, Nethercote (approx. 15–20 minutes from Eden or Pambula).
- The Hike: The track to the falls is roughly 2km return. It is considered a Grade 4 walk; while the first section is relatively easy, the descent into the falls can be steep, slippery, and involves navigating uneven rocks. A moderate level of fitness and sturdy footwear are highly recommended.
- Facilities: This is a primitive site. There are no toilets, bins, or picnic tables at the falls themselves. It is a true "pack-in, pack-out" destination.
- Access: The access road is unsealed. While usually accessible by 2WD in dry weather, a 4WD is recommended after heavy rain as the road can become muddy and corrugated.
Travel Tips
- Safety First: The rock pool is very deep, but submerged rocks can be present. Diving and jumping are strictly discouraged due to the risk of injury.
- Timing: To see the falls at their most powerful, visit after moderate rainfall. For the clearest swimming water, wait a few days for the sediment to settle.
- Stay Connected: Mobile reception is limited in the gully. Ensure you have downloaded your offline maps or let someone know your plans before heading into the forest.

Important Information
Guidelines
- Always do some research before heading out for your journey. Visit the parks website for up to date information on the current conditions. Ensure to check for any updates relating to any warnings that may be issued for the area, and check for the opening and closing times.
- Always enjoy waterfalls from trails and marked viewing points. Do not climb over barriers as cliff edges and slippery surfaces may cause injury or death.
- Only swim where permitted. Don’t jump from cliff edges into water bodies.
- Swimming near or under waterfalls can be dangerous due to strong currents, submerged hidden rock ledges and other dangers. The force of a waterfall can be incredibly strong and unfortunately, many people have drowned. Follow warning signs and take caution.
- Wear suitable footwear and ensure to bring a hat and sunscreen to protect yourself from the elements.
- Plan ahead and ensure to take enough food and water for your journey.
- Always stay on the marked tracks where possible. Never climb fences, they are there for your own safety.
- Please consider the environment, take your rubbish with you or place in the bins provided. We want to ensure these beautiful places are still here for our future generations to enjoy.
- Ensure to let a responsible adult know of your plans and report back into them once you have finished exploring for the day.
- Leave nothing but footprints. Take nothing but memories.
