All About

Ngaro Track

Walking trail: Grade 4 | 32km return hike | 3 day / 2 night one-way

Deep in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area, the Ngaro Sea Trail and the iconic Ngaro Track offer a rare, world-class opportunity to experience the Whitsunday Islands on foot. Named in honor of the Ngaro people, the Traditional Owners of this spectacular land and sea Country, this unique network of seaways and hiking trails blends rugged tropical trekking, pristine marine ecosystems, and ancient cultural history.

While the broader Sea Trail connects paths across South Molle and Hook Islands, the absolute crown jewel is the Ngaro Track. This remote, 32km multi-day hiking experience traverses the wild interior of Whitsunday Island. Accessible only by boat, the challenging 3-day, 2-night trek begins on the pure silica sands of South Whitehaven Beach and finishes overlooking the breathtaking, swirling turquoise waters of Hill Inlet.

Why It Deserves a Spot on Your Aussie Bucket List:

The Whitsunday Craig Summit: Challenge yourself on Day 2 with a climb to the top of the Whitsunday Craig (353m elevation). Reached via a cliff-face ladder, the summit serves up unmatched, panoramic views over the Great Barrier Reef.

Exclusive Island Camping: Unwind at purpose-built, remote campsites hidden away on the island. Fall asleep high on a rocky ridgeline under the stars at Bowarri yamba (Moon Camp) on night one, and right on the shoreline at Dhula yamba (Tree Camp) on night two.

Ancient Rock Art: On Hook Island’s Nara Inlet, a short walk leads to the protected Ngaro Cultural Site, where you can marvel at ancient Indigenous rock art and learn about 9,000 years of coastal history.

Diverse Landscapes: Move dynamically through constantly shifting terrain, from lush tropical rainforests and mangrove boardwalks to rugged headlands and pandanus-fringed beaches.

How to Tackle the Trail:

The multi-day Ngaro Track is a remote, Grade 4 wilderness trek requiring good fitness and strict self-sufficiency. Because it is completely un-commercially developed, you must arrange your own boat transfers (via local water taxis like Scamper) and carry all your own food and water.

The best time to hike the Whitsundays is during the cooler, drier months from April to October. Whether you opt for a fully-guided eco-tour or a self-sufficient independent hike, this is the ultimate off-the-grid Queensland adventure to add to your bucket list.

Important Information

Guidelines

  • Always do some research before heading out for your journey. Visit the parks website for up to date information on the current conditions. Ensure to check for any updates relating to any warnings that may be issued for the area, and check for the opening and closing times.
  • Wear suitable footwear and ensure to bring a hat and sunscreen to protect yourself from the elements.
  • Plan ahead and ensure to take enough food and water for your journey.
  • Always stay on the marked tracks where possible. Never climb fences, they are there for your own safety.
  • Please consider the environment, take your rubbish with you or place in the bins provided. We want to ensure these beautiful places are still here for our future generations to enjoy.
  • Ensure to let a responsible adult know of your plans and report back into them once you have finished exploring for the day.
  • Leave nothing but footprints. Take nothing but memories.
