Kangaroos Near the Noosa Everglades
The Noosa Everglades, part of the UNESCO-listed Noosa Biosphere Reserve, is one of only two Everglades systems globally and a hotspot for native wildlife, including the iconic eastern grey kangaroo, along with wallabies, possums, echidnas, and myriad native bird species. Within the Habitat Noosa Eco Camp—nestled at the edge of the Everglades and Lake Cootharaba—roos form regular “mob” sightings across grassy fields, lakeside areas, and shaded forest edges. The property, which spans roughly 65 acres, is effectively a kangaroo sanctuary where these pouch-bearing marsupials thrive and roam freely, often interacting with guests in a serene bushland setting.
Behavior & Habitat
Eastern grey kangaroos at Noosa Everglades roost in shady woodlands during the heat of the day and emerge at sunrise and dusk, the prime time to see them grazing, socialising, or even cautiously entering shallow waters in single file—sometimes in a behaviour local media dubbed “kangaroos walking on water”. These kangaroos are frequently observed near Lake Cootharaba shores and the grassy expanses around Habitat Noosa. A viral TikTok captured eight kangaroos hopping approximately 20 metres into the lake and then settling calmly—a rare but shared wild behaviour in the region.
Their daily routine includes grazing on lush grasslands surrounding campsites and exploring the boundaries of the Eco Camp. Locals note that these roos sometimes "cluck like chickens when happy" or “thump their tails like drumrolls” when sensing danger—little dramas in the world of roo social life.
Wildlife Context & Biodiversity
The Eastern grey kangaroo is part of a richly biodiverse ecosystem:
- The Noosa Biosphere Reserve hosts over 3,023 wildlife species, with more than 700 native species including kangaroos, glossy black cockatoos, echidnas, and flying foxes.
- Almost 40% of Australia’s bird species are found in the area, making it ideal for wildlife lovers seeking varied encounters beyond kangaroos—such as jabirus, sea eagles, ospreys, and more.
- The Eco Camp and Everglades environment emphasize sustainability and habitat preservation, allowing local wildlife populations, including kangaroos, to flourish away from high-impact development.
Best Times & Sightings Tips
- Early morning and late afternoon are peak viewing times when kangaroos are most active and visible near lakeside grasslands.
- The Habitat Noosa Eco Camp is an excellent vantage point: kangaroos roam freely right outside guest tents at sunrise, offering natural photo opportunities without disturbance.
- Wildlife tours and guided visits to the Everglades Eco Safari also include kangaroo spotting—combined with kayaking excursions through the “River of Mirrors,” offering views of roos grazing on open riverbank flats.
Conservation
These kangaroos are not just tourist attractions—they represent successful coexistence in a region protected by the Noosa Biosphere Reserve’s conservation policies, community stewardship, and sustainable tourism initiatives,
Places like Habitat Noosa play a vital role by preserving wildlife corridors and maintaining open habitat where mobs of eastern grey kangaroos can thrive in their natural environment, visible to guests without interference.
