Overview

Highlights

The Northern Rivers Rail Trail is a must-do family friendly Aussie Bucket List experience located south of the Gold Coast in the Northern Rivers region of NSW. The Northern Rivers Rail Trail is a shared recreation and nature trail which will connect the Tweed Valley with Byron Shire, Lismore and Casino. It is free to use and provides a safe environment for walkers, cyclists, and people of abilities to explore the beautiful Northern Rivers region.

The first completed 24 kilometres section of the rail trail is in the Tweed connecting Murwillumbah to Crabbes Creek. The rail trail features 6km of sealed asphalt including the sections from Murwillumbah Railway Station to the Tweed Regional Gallery, at Stokers Siding and between the villages of Burringbar and Mooball. The remaining 18km is a solid compacted gravel.

The entire rail trail surface is suitable for all types of mobility devices. Users will enjoy stunning scenery and vistas with the opportunity to rest at one of eight stops along the way. Explore scenic towns and villages, learn about local history and immerse into the natural environment in one of the most biodiverse locations in Australia.

There are 26 bridges and 2 tunnels on The Tweed section. You will cross 16 bridges, bypass 10 of them and travel through Burringbar Range Tunnel (500m) and Hulls Road Tunnel (50m). The Burringbar Range Tunnel has no lighting to preserve the glow worms and microbats. with users advised to take a light to assist with visibility inside the tunnel.
