Overview

Highlights

Tasmania's Overland Track is a must-do bucket list hike if you love a challenge, enjoy hiking and exploring Australia's great outdoors. The Overland Track is Australia's premier bucket list alpine walk. It's a 65 kilometre, six-day trek through the heart of the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park, part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. The scenery and the physical challenge of the Overland Track have assured it a national and international reputation as one of the great wilderness bush walks. Almost half of the track is above 1000 metres in elevation on exposed plateaus in a remote area. Thorough preparation and good gear is essential.

During the popular walking months, from 1 October to 31 May (inclusive) you must book your walk, pay a fee, and walk from north (Cradle Mountain) to south (Lake St Clair). During winter and early spring, from 1 June to 30 September, you do not need to book or pay, and can walk in either direction.

The walk starts at Ronny Creek in Cradle Valley, beside Cradle Mountain. Over the next six days, walkers journey through a landscape of gla¬cially-carved valleys, ancient rainforests, fragrant eucalypt forest, golden buttongrass moorlands alpine meadows. Optional side-trips include waterfalls and mountain summits, including Mt Ossa (1617 metres) – Tasmania's highest peak. There are huts along the way or camp sites if you prefer.

You will need to carry your own equipment and food for the entire journey. From the Overland Track visitor services counter, board the Shuttle Bus outside the Visitor Centre to travel to the departure point at Ronny Creek. (Buses depart regularly during the booking season.) Make sure you sign in at the Walker Registration booth at Ronny Creek.

Important Information

Guidelines

  • WARNING: The Overland Track is a serious undertaking, for well–prepared walkers, with a good level of fitness and who understand the risks of walking in a remote alpine area. Weather can change rapidly and deaths have occurred, even in summer, when people have been caught underprepared in cold, wet and windy weather. The track is not recommended for children under 8 years.
  • Always do some research before heading out for your journey. Visit the parks website for up to date information on the current conditions.
  • Stay safe and get the most out of your park visit by preparing for natural hazards and other outdoor risks. You are responsible for your own safety and the safety of those in your care.
  • Wear suitable footwear and ensure to wear appropriate clothing to protect yourself from the elements..
  • Plan ahead and ensure to take enough food and water for your journey.
  • Always stay on the marked tracks where possible. Never climb fences, they are there for your own safety.
  • Please consider the environment, take your rubbish with you or place in the bins provided. We want to ensure these beautiful places are still here for our future generations to enjoy.
  • Ensure to let a responsible adult know of your plans and report back into them once you have finished exploring for the day.
  • National park and camping fees apply for Tasmanian National Parks. Check the parks website for bookings and/ or further details.
  • Weather conditions in Tasmania can change quickly and frequently, especially in alpine areas. Snow, rain, wind and sun are all possible at any time of the year, and bushfires can occur between October and March.
