All About

Prison Island

A Historic Gem in the Cocos Lagoon

Rising out of the crystal-clear turquoise waters between Home Island and Direction Island, Prison Island (known in local Cocos Malay as Pulu Beras) is one of the most intriguing islets in the Cocos (Keeling) atoll. Steeped in early 19th-century settlement lore, this tiny island played a pivotal role during the legendary rivalry between Scottish merchant John Clunies-Ross and English adventurer Alexander Hare.

Whether you arrive by motorized canoe tour, glass-bottom boat, or private vessel, Prison Island offers a serene, remote escape where history meets breathtaking Indian Ocean scenery.

Activities

  • Explore Rich Atoll History: Discover the legend of Alexander Hare's early 1820s settlement—where the island earned its moniker as "Prisoner Island" during disputes with the Clunies-Ross family.
  • Lagoon Snorkeling & Swimming: Wade or snorkel through pristine, calm shallow waters teeming with colourful tropical fish, hermit crabs, and friendly reef life.
  • Motorised Canoe & Boat Tours: Visit as part of popular guided lagoon excursions, such as canoe safaris or glass-bottom boat tours, which stop at Prison Island for picnics and exploration.
  • Unrivalled Photography Views: Capture sweeping 360-degree panoramas of the surrounding azure lagoon and neighboring islands across the atoll.
