Overview

Highlights

Protesters Falls are located in Nightcap National Park, Northern NSW, west of Byron Bay.

The falls were named after the Terania Creek protests of the late 1970’s that saved the rainforest from human destruction. Protesters blocked the path of loggers that were planning to bulldoze this precious rainforest.

In 1982 the NSW Premier, Neville Wran, made the historic decision to save approximately 100,000 hectares of forest from the timber production industry. A very controversial decision at the time as 600 jobs were estimated to be lost in the timber industry in the region after this decision was made.

The traditional owners of the land were surprised by the determination of the protesters who had arrived to love the land as they did and helped them to protect their ‘storybook’ place.

The waterfalls and rainforest are now protected for everyone to admire. There are endangered frogs that live in this creek so swimming is not allowed as the oils and chemicals on the human body (deodorant, sunscreen, etc) contaminate the water which destroys the frogs natural habitat.

It’s a relatively easy track to get to the falls, just 1.4km return through a World Heritage Listed rainforest.

Important Information

Guidelines

  • Always do some research before heading out for your journey. Visit the parks website for the most up to date information.
  • Always enjoy waterfalls from trails and marked viewing points. Do not climb over barriers as cliff edges and slippery surfaces may cause injury or death.
  • Only swim where permitted. Don’t jump from cliff edges into water bodies.
  • Swimming near or under waterfalls can be dangerous due to strong currents, submerged hidden rock ledges and other dangers. The force of a waterfall can be incredibly strong and unfortunately, many people have drowned. Follow warning signs and take caution.
  • Ensure you observe all safety signs. Always stay on the marked tracks where possible. Never climb fences, they are there for your own safety.
  • Wear suitable footwear and always ensure to bring a hat and sunscreen to protect yourself from the elements when exploring Australia.
  • Plan ahead and ensure to take enough food and water for your journey.
  • Please consider the environment, take your rubbish with you or place in the bins provided. We want to ensure these beautiful places are still here for our future generations to enjoy.
  • Please do not feed the wildlife.
