Python Pool
Walking trail: 200m return hike | 20 minutes return
DANGER: Sheer cliffs and waterfalls. One slip could be fatal—serious injury or death may result from walking near the edge. Keep to the track. Supervise children closely.
Looking for the ultimate outback swim? Python Pool in Millstream Chichester National Park is a must-add to your Western Australia bucket list. Nestled at the base of towering ochre cliffs in the rugged Chichester Range, this permanent freshwater swimming hole offers a cool, refreshing escape in the heart of the Pilbara.
Why Visit Python Pool?
Unlike many seasonal waterholes, Python Pool holds water year-round, making it a reliable destination for travellers exploring the North West. The dramatic backdrop of ancient rock formations and the deep, emerald water create a photographer's paradise.
- Swimming: A deep, cool rock pool perfect for a refreshing dip after a long drive.
- Accessibility: Easily accessible via the Roebourne-Wittenoom Road. The walk from the car park to the water is a short, 100m stroll (Class 3 trail).
- Hiking: Adventure seekers can tackle the Chichester Range Camel Trail, an 8km (one way) hike that starts at the pool and follows an old historic camel road up the escarpment.
- Wildlife: Keep an eye out for local birdlife and the vibrant Sturt’s Desert Pea which often blooms in the surrounding spinifex plains.
Essential Travel Tips
- Best Time to Visit: The cooler months from May to August offer the most comfortable temperatures for swimming and hiking.
- Facilities: Basic toilets and picnic tables are available at the car park.
- Park Fees: National Park entry fees apply. It is recommended to purchase your pass online or at the Karratha/Roebourne Visitor Centres.
- Safety: The water can be very cold, even in summer. Always check for local park alerts regarding water quality or road closures before heading out.
Whether you're on a 4WD adventure through the Pilbara or a day trip from Karratha (approx. 2 hours away), Python Pool is a stunning example of WA’s raw, natural beauty.

Important Information
Guidelines
- Always do some research before heading out for your journey. Visit the parks website for up to date information on the current conditions. Ensure to check for any updates relating to any warnings that may be issued for the area, and check for the opening and closing times.
- Always enjoy waterfalls from trails and marked viewing points. Do not climb over barriers as cliff edges and slippery surfaces may cause injury or death.
- Only swim where permitted. Don’t jump from cliff edges into water bodies.
- Swimming near or under waterfalls can be dangerous due to strong currents, submerged hidden rock ledges and other dangers. The force of a waterfall can be incredibly strong and unfortunately, many people have drowned. Follow warning signs and take caution.
- Wear suitable footwear and ensure to bring a hat and sunscreen to protect yourself from the elements.
- Plan ahead and ensure to take enough food and water for your journey.
- Always stay on the marked tracks where possible. Never climb fences, they are there for your own safety.
- Please consider the environment, take your rubbish with you or place in the bins provided. We want to ensure these beautiful places are still here for our future generations to enjoy.
- Ensure to let a responsible adult know of your plans and report back into them once you have finished exploring for the day.
- Leave nothing but footprints. Take nothing but memories.
