Ralphs Falls: Discover Tasmania’s Spectacular Highland Hidden Gem

Walking trail: Grade 3

20 minute | 2.4km return

or 50 minute circuit via Cashs Gorge | 4km circuit

Highlight: The Norm’s Lookout view and the moss-covered "Sphagnum Forest."

If you are looking for a destination that truly defines "off the beaten track," Ralphs Falls is it. Perched high on the Mt. Victoria plateau in Tasmania’s Northeast, this breathtaking 90-metre single-drop waterfall is one of the island's tallest and most dramatic cascades.

While the crowds head to the coastal beaches, those who make the winding journey into the highlands are rewarded with a misty, ancient landscape that feels like a scene from Jurassic Park. Here is everything you need to know about visiting this highland wonder.

The Experience: Two Ways to Explore

Ralphs Falls offers two distinct experiences depending on how much time you have:

1. The Quick View (Lookout Track)

A short, easy walk from the car park leads you through a forest of stunted highland gums and colorful wildflowers. Within 10 minutes, you reach the cliff-edge lookout. From here, you can see the water plummeting nearly 100 metres into the lush gully below. On a windy day, the water often doesn't even hit the bottom—it gets blown back up into a fine mist!

2. Norm’s Loop (The Deep Dive)

If you have an hour to spare, the Norm's Loop is highly recommended. This circuit takes you through an incredible "Sphagnum Forest" where the ground is covered in thick, emerald-green moss and giant tree ferns. You’ll also reach Norm’s Lookout, which offers a spectacular panoramic view of the falls across the gorge, showing the true scale of the drop.

Top Tips for Your Ralphs Falls Adventure

  1. Watch the Weather: Because the falls are located at a high altitude (over 900 metres), it is often significantly cooler here than on the coast. It is frequently shrouded in mist, which adds a spooky, beautiful vibe, but make sure you bring a warm jacket!
  2. The Winding Road: The drive to the falls is an adventure in itself. Be prepared for a long, unsealed (gravel) road with plenty of switchbacks. It is 2WD accessible, but you’ll want to take it slow—especially if it’s been raining.
  3. Combine with Cash’s Falls: Just a short distance from the main lookout is the smaller but equally beautiful Cash’s Falls. It’s worth the extra few minutes to see both while you’re there.
  4. Bring Your Own Supplies: This is a remote State Reserve. There are basic toilet facilities and picnic tables, but no shops or cafes for miles. Pack a thermos and some snacks to enjoy at the picnic area.

How to Get There

Ralphs Falls is located near the town of Ringarooma in Northeast Tasmania.

  • From Launceston: It’s about a 1 hour and 45-minute drive via the Tasman Highway (A3).
  • The Route: Follow the signs from Pyengana or Ringarooma. The final 15km is on Mt Victoria Road, which is a narrow gravel road.
