If your idea of a perfect Aussie adventure involves escaping the crowds, navigating a rugged bush trail, and cooling off in a crystal-clear natural pool, then Scout Falls needs to be at the top of your travel list. Nestled within the lush Sherwood Nature Reserve—just a 40-minute drive from the coastal hub of Coffs Harbour—this stunning 10-metre waterfall is a pristine oasis that remains one of the region's best-kept secrets.
While the famous beaches of the Coffs Coast draw the crowds, Scout Falls offers a different kind of magic. It’s a place where the air is thick with the scent of eucalyptus and the only sound you’ll hear is the roar of water cascading over ancient sandstone into a deep, emerald-green plunge pool.
The Journey: A Scrambler’s Paradise
Getting to Scout Falls is half the fun. Unlike the manicured paths of nearby National Parks, the trail here is an unofficial, rugged track that follows Middle Creek.
The Hike: It’s a moderate 1.2km return trek that requires a bit of "rock-hopping" and scrambling over boulders.
The Experience: You’ll weave through subtropical rainforest and cross the creek multiple times. Keep an eye out for the "mini-cascade" about 5 minutes into the walk—it’s a great teaser for the main event!
Difficulty: While short, the path can be slippery and overgrown, so it’s best suited for active adventurers and families with older children who don't mind getting their feet a little wet.
Wild Swimming at its Best
Once you arrive at the falls, the reward is immediate. The waterfall drops into a wide, deep natural waterhole that is perfect for a refreshing dip after the hike.
- Nature’s Shower: Venture to the far side of the pool to stand directly under the falls for a natural "bush shower."
- Silica Sands: Much like the island lakes of K’gari, the fine sand around the creek is incredibly pure.
- Photography Gold: The contrast of the orange-toned rocks against the vibrant green forest and white spray makes this one of the most photogenic spots on the Mid-North Coast.
Essential Travel Tips for Scout Falls
- Footwear is Key: Leave the flip-flops in the car. You’ll want sturdy walking shoes or high-grip water shoes for the rocky sections.
- Check the Weather: The falls are most spectacular after recent rainfall, but be aware that heavy rain can make the creek crossings more challenging.
- Leave No Trace: There are no bins or facilities at the trail head. Please pack out everything you bring in to keep this hidden gem pristine.
- Sunscreen Safety: To protect the delicate ecosystem of Middle Creek (home to local frogs and fish), avoid wearing heavy sunscreens or insect repellents right before jumping in.

Important Information
Guidelines
- Always do some research before heading out for your journey. Visit the parks website for up to date information on the current conditions. Ensure to check for any updates relating to any warnings that may be issued for the area, and check for the opening and closing times.
- Always enjoy waterfalls from trails and marked viewing points. Do not climb over barriers as cliff edges and slippery surfaces may cause injury or death.
- Only swim where permitted. Don’t jump from cliff edges into water bodies.
- Swimming near or under waterfalls can be dangerous due to strong currents, submerged hidden rock ledges and other dangers. The force of a waterfall can be incredibly strong and unfortunately, many people have drowned. Follow warning signs and take caution.
- Wear suitable footwear and ensure to bring a hat and sunscreen to protect yourself from the elements.
- Plan ahead and ensure to take enough food and water for your journey.
- Always stay on the marked tracks where possible. Never climb fences, they are there for your own safety.
- Please consider the environment, take your rubbish with you or place in the bins provided. We want to ensure these beautiful places are still here for our future generations to enjoy.
- Ensure to let a responsible adult know of your plans and report back into them once you have finished exploring for the day.
- Leave nothing but footprints. Take nothing but memories.
