St Columba Falls: Discovering One of Tasmania’s Tallest Waterfalls

When people think of Tasmania, they often imagine the rugged peaks of Cradle Mountain or the beaches of the Bay of Fires. But hidden in the lush, emerald hills of the Pyengana Valley lies a thunderous secret: St Columba Falls.

At over 90 metres high, St Columba is one of the tallest waterfalls in Tasmania. Whether it’s a misty winter morning or a bright summer afternoon, the sheer power of this cascade and the ancient forest surrounding it make it an essential stop on any East Coast itinerary.

The Experience: A Walk Through an Ancient World

The journey to the falls is just as spectacular as the destination. The walk follows a high-quality, paved track that winds through a cool-temperate rainforest. You’ll find yourself walking beneath some of the tallest tree ferns in the world—some of which are hundreds of years old.

The air here is crisp and carries the scent of damp moss and sassafras. As you descend toward the South George River, the sound of the falls grows from a distant hum to a powerful roar.

The Main Event: 90 Metres of Power

The track ends at a sturdy viewing platform located right at the base of the falls. From here, you can watch the water plummet over massive granite ledges.

  • After the Rain: If you visit after a heavy rainfall, the experience is visceral—you’ll likely feel the cool mist on your face as the water thunders down the rock face.
  • Photography Tip: Use a tripod and a slow shutter speed to capture that "silky" water effect against the dark, moody granite rocks.

How to Make a Day of It: The Pyengana "Taste-Trail"

A visit to St Columba Falls isn’t complete without exploring the surrounding valley. The Pyengana region is world-famous for its dairy.

  1. Pyengana Dairy Company: Stop by to taste their award-winning cloth-bound cheddar. You can even watch the cows being milked by robots!
  2. The Pub in the Paddock: Visit the historic St. Columba Falls Hotel (famously known as the Pub in the Paddock) to meet their beer-drinking pig and enjoy a classic country lunch.

Top Tips for Your Visit

  1. Accessibility: The track is well-maintained and mostly flat, making it great for kids and seniors. However, there are a few gentle slopes that may be challenging for unassisted wheelchairs.
  2. Wildlife: Keep a quiet eye out for platypus in the South George River. They are often spotted near the bridge at the start of the walk in the early morning or late evening.
  3. The Drive: The 30-minute drive from St Helens is beautiful, winding through rolling dairy pastures and dense forest. Watch out for wildlife on the road, especially at dusk!

How to Get There

St Columba Falls is located in the St Columba Falls State Reserve.

  • From St Helens: Drive approximately 35 minutes west via the Tasman Highway (A3).
  • Follow the signs toward Pyengana and turn onto St Columba Falls Road.

Guidelines

  • Always do some research before heading out for your journey. Visit the parks website for up to date information on the current conditions. Ensure to check for any updates relating to any warnings that may be issued for the area, and check for the opening and closing times.
  • Always enjoy waterfalls from trails and marked viewing points. Do not climb over barriers as cliff edges and slippery surfaces may cause injury or death.
  • Wear suitable footwear and ensure to bring a hat and sunscreen to protect yourself from the elements.
  • Plan ahead and ensure to take enough food and water for your journey.
  • Always stay on the marked tracks where possible. Never climb fences, they are there for your own safety.
  • Please consider the environment, take your rubbish with you or place in the bins provided. We want to ensure these beautiful places are still here for our future generations to enjoy.
  • Ensure to let a responsible adult know of your plans and report back into them once you have finished exploring for the day.
  • Leave nothing but footprints. Take nothing but memories.
