Stony Creek: A Natural Swimming Paradise in Moreton Bay

Searching for the ultimate freshwater escape near Brisbane? Stony Creek in the Moreton Bay Region is a stunning, boulder-strewn oasis that belongs on every Queenslander’s summer bucket list. Located within Bellthorpe National Park (near Woodford), this "boulder-hopper’s dream" offers crystal-clear rock pools and a serene rainforest backdrop that feels a world away from the city.

Why Stony Creek is a Must-Visit

Stony Creek is famous for its large, clear natural swimming hole and the cascading rock pools that feed into it. It is the perfect spot for families looking to trade the beach for the bush.

  • Natural Swimming Hole: A flat, 20-metre dirt track from the car park leads you straight to the main swimming area. It’s easily accessible for prams and young explorers.
  • Boulder Hopping & Waterfalls: Venture further along the creek to find smaller rock pools and gentle cascades. It’s a fantastic spot for kids to spot native fish, turtles, and the occasional freshwater prawn.
  • Wildlife Spotting: The canopy is alive with the calls of whipbirds and cicadas. Keep an eye out for elegant tree frogs and a variety of colorful local birdlife.
  • Picnics & BBQs: The day-use area features a spacious, grassy lawn perfect for a picnic blanket. There are picnic tables and wood-fired barbecues available (just remember to bring your own clean, milled timber).

Essential Visitor Info

  • Location: Fletcher Road, Bellthorpe (approx. 15 minutes from Woodford or 90 minutes from Brisbane CBD).
  • Facilities: Toilets, picnic tables, and wood BBQs are provided.
  • Leave No Trace: There are no rubbish bins at Stony Creek. To keep this 4.5-star destination pristine, please take all your waste home with you.
  • Dog Policy: As Stony Creek is located within a National Park, dogs and domestic pets are strictly prohibited to protect the local wildlife.
  • What to Bring: Reef shoes or sturdy sandals are highly recommended for navigating the slippery rocks. Don't forget your snorkel to see what’s hiding beneath the surface!

Travel Tips

  • Be Rain Ready: Like most natural waterways, avoid swimming for at least three days after heavy rain to ensure water quality is at its best.
  • Stay Safe: Always check the depth before jumping or diving, as submerged logs and rocks can move during rain events.
  • Early Bird: This spot is a local favorite. On hot summer weekends, arrive before 10:00 am to secure a prime picnic spot and a car park.
