Sundown Nature Trail

Highlights

The 'Sundown Nature Trail' is situated in the rocky Sundown Hills, on the northern edge of the Broken Hill Common. The hills are sparsely vegetated with tough, perennial plants adapted to the harsh, dry environment and in good seasons, ephemeral grasses and wildflowers. Native animals can be easily seen.

Suggested time to leave town is about three hours before sunset. The walk is 2.8 kilometres long, through rocky terrain and takes about one to one and a half hours to complete.

Important Information

Guidelines

  • Always do some research before heading out for your journey. Visit the parks website for up to date information on the current conditions.
  • Although close to town, it is still the outback. Do not attempt the walk during the middle of a hot day in summer. Take your own water and supplies. Wear strong shoes. Hiking poles are recommended.
  • Although the Sundown Nature Trail is part of the larger Living Desert State Park it is not accessible from the Nine Mile Road. Follow the Silver City Highway towards Tibooburra for 10km. The turnoff to the Sundown Nature Trail is signposted and is just before Lawrence Engineering’s large shed. Follow the 2.2km graded track to a car park at the beginning of the trail.
  • Wear suitable footwear and ensure to bring a hat and sunscreen to protect yourself from the elements.
  • Plan ahead and ensure to take enough food and water for your journey.
  • Always stay on the marked tracks where possible. Never climb fences, they are there for your own safety.
  • Please consider the environment, take your rubbish with you or place in the bins provided. We want to ensure these beautiful places are still here for our future generations to enjoy.
  • Ensure to let a responsible adult know of your plans and report back into them once you have finished exploring for the day.
