Sydney Harbour Bridge

An Icon of Australian Engineering and Adventure

The Sydney Harbour Bridge is one of the most recognised and celebrated landmarks in Australia. Stretching across the sparkling waters of Sydney Harbour, this colossal steel arch bridge not only connects the northern and southern shores of Sydney but also symbolises the city’s ambition, resilience, and world-class engineering prowess.

Nicknamed “The Coathanger” due to its distinctive shape, the Sydney Harbour Bridge has become a bucket list experience for millions of travellers from around the world. Whether you're admiring it from afar, walking or cycling across it, or taking on the thrilling BridgeClimb, this iconic structure offers unforgettable perspectives of the harbour, the Sydney Opera House, and the bustling city skyline.

A Brief History

Warrie Circuit is a must-do Aussie Bucket List hike loaded with waterfalls located in Springbrook National Park in the Gold Coast Hinterland. Start at Canyon lookout or Tallanbana. The longest and most interesting track on the plateau follows the base of The Canyon cliffs to Goomoolahra Falls before descending into the mossy green depths of the rainforest. The track (named with the Aboriginal word 'Warrie', meaning 'rushing water') crosses several creeks and gullies. The track reaches the 'Meeting of the Waters', where all watercourses draining The Canyon meet, then climbs up the western side of the gorge.

The moist and shady conditions at the base of Goomoolahra Falls provide an ideal habitat for the giant spear lilies Doryanthes palmeri. This succulent herb is one of only two members of the Doryanthiacea plant family, which is endemic to Australia.

Things to Do on and Around the Bridge

BridgeClimb Sydney: For the ultimate adventure, climb to the summit of the bridge with a guided tour. Available at dawn, day, twilight, and night, the climb offers 360-degree views of the city and is often regarded as one of the top urban climbs in the world.

Pedestrian Walkway: You can walk across the eastern side of the bridge for free, offering panoramic views of the harbour and a perfect vantage point to photograph the Opera House.

Cycle the Bridge: A dedicated cycle path on the western side makes for a scenic and active way to cross the harbour.

Pylon Lookout and Museum: Located on the southeastern end of the bridge, the Pylon Lookout features historical exhibits and a breathtaking observation deck for those who prefer their views without a harness.

Best Time of Year to Visit

The Sydney Harbour Bridge is a year-round attraction, but the best time to visit is during the Australian spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May). During these months, the weather is mild, skies are typically clear, and crowds are more manageable than during the peak summer period.

New Year’s Eve is another iconic time to visit, as the bridge becomes the centrepiece of Sydney’s world-famous fireworks display, attracting spectators from across the globe.

If you're considering a BridgeClimb, early morning and twilight climbs are particularly magical, offering golden hour light and fewer crowds.

Getting There

The bridge is located in the heart of Sydney and is easily accessible via public transport. Circular Quay train station is just a short walk away from the pedestrian entrance, and the city’s ferry network also provides scenic access. For drivers, toll roads lead directly onto the bridge.

Fun Fact

The bridge was originally painted with lead-based grey paint to protect it from corrosion — a job that required continuous repainting. Today, it's estimated that every coat of paint requires over 30,000 litres, and repainting the entire structure takes over a decade!

Whether you're crossing it, climbing it, or simply admiring it, the Sydney Harbour Bridge is more than just infrastructure — it’s a symbol of Australia’s innovation and adventurous spirit. A visit here is a must for anyone wanting to experience the soul of Sydney.
