Overview

Highlights

Add the Thorsborne Trail on Hinchinbrook Island National Park to your Aussie Bucket List if you enjoy a challenging hike through Australia's beautiful outdoors.

The Thorsborne Trail is a 32 kilometre walking trail along the eastern side of Hinchinbrook Island National Park, which takes four days to complete. Hinchinbrook Island is rugged and outstanding. Its high cloud-covered mountains support fragile heath vegetation. Lush rainforest and eucalypt forest descend to a mangrove-fringed channel in the west with sweeping bays and rocky headlands along the east coast. The island is within the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area.

The Thorsborne Trail is not a graded or hardened walking track and, in some areas, is rough and difficult to traverse. You need to be fit, experienced, well-prepared and fully self-sufficient. The trail is managed under the minimal impact bushwalking and no-trace camping ethics. Camping areas are provided along the trail. You need permits to camp and walk the trail.

The trail is often fully booked during peak periods and school holidays so purchase your permit well in advance to avoid disappointment. Permits are issued for a maximum of 40 people on the trail at any one time (largest group size is six). Obtain a copy of the Thorsborne Trail guide before you set off.

Important Information

Guidelines

  • Always do some research before heading out for your journey. Visit the parks website for up to date information on the current conditions. Ensure to check for any updates relating to any warnings that may be issued for the area, and check for the opening and closing times.
  • Wear suitable footwear and ensure to bring a hat and sunscreen to protect yourself from the elements.
  • Plan ahead and ensure to take enough food, camping gear and water for your journey.
  • Always stay on the marked tracks where possible.
  • Please consider the environment, take your rubbish with you. We want to ensure these beautiful places are still here for our future generations to enjoy.
  • National Park fees may apply. Check the islands website for the most up to date information regarding bookings and pricing.
  • Do not feed the wildlife.
  • Leave nothing but footprints. Take nothing but memories.
  • A family group is defined as one or two adults and accompanying children under 18, up to a total of eight people. Children under five years of age camp for free.
  • The most popular camping spots are in high demand, especially during peak periods like public and school holidays. For these sites we recommend booking at least six weeks in advance. In some parks and forests you can book up to 12 months in advance.
  • Prices may change at any time at the discretion of QLD Parks. Check their website for the most up to date information.
