Unearth Ancient Treasures: Thunderegg Fossicking at Thunderbird Park

Looking for a "rock-solid" family adventure? Thunderegg Fossicking at Thunderbird Park on Mount Tamborine is a world-class experience that deserves a top spot on your Queensland bucket list. Nestled within the lush rainforests of the Gold Coast Hinterland, this is officially the world’s largest thunderegg mine, offering a prehistoric mystery just waiting to be uncovered.

The Thunderegg Experience

Formed by volcanic activity over 200 million years ago, thundereggs look like ordinary rocks on the outside but often hide stunning agate, jasper, or quartz crystals within.

  • The Hunt: Armed with a pick and a bucket, you’ll head into the open-air mine to dig for your own treasures. It’s a hands-on, muddy, and incredibly rewarding activity for "kids" of all ages.
  • Keep What You Find: The best part? You get to keep the treasures you unearth!
  • Rock Cutting: Once you’ve finished digging, head to the onsite Rock Shop. For a small fee, the experts will cut your thundereggs open, revealing the sparkling surprise hidden inside for the first time in millions of years.

Beyond the Mine

Thunderbird Park is a massive adventure playground. After you’ve struck it rich, you can explore:

  • TreeTop Challenge: Conquer Australia’s largest high ropes course and zipline canopy tour.
  • Dig IT: Australia’s first mini-excavator park for kids.
  • Cedar Creek: Cool off in the natural rock pools or enjoy a picnic by the water.
