About Destination

Location

Nestled in the heart of the Whitsunday Islands off the central coast of Queensland, Australia, Hamilton Island is the premier gateway to the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Located approximately 887km north of Brisbane and 512km south of Cairns, this tropical oasis is the largest inhabited island in the archipelago. Its unique position at roughly the same latitude as Honolulu ensures a year-round tropical climate, making it a world-class destination for sun-seekers. As the only Whitsunday island with its own commercial airport (HTI) and a private marina, it offers unparalleled accessibility via direct flights from Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane, or a scenic 60-minute ferry ride from Airlie Beach on the mainland.

TOP Bucket List Experiences and Attractions on Hamilton Island

1 - Hike to Passage Peak at Sunrise

For the ultimate Hamilton Island sunrise, the Passage Peak hiking trail is a must-do adventure for every visitor's Whitsunday bucket list. As the highest point on the island (reaching 234m above sea level), this challenging 5.3km return hike begins at the Scenic Trail entrance near Catseye Beach and rewards early risers with breathtaking 360-degree views of the archipelago. The trail is well-maintained but steep, featuring a final leg of significant stairs that will test your fitness. To make the most of this Grade 3 trek, hikers should set off roughly 45–60 minutes before first light, carry plenty of water, and wear sturdy enclosed shoes. Reaching the summit just as the golden sun breaks over the Coral Sea is widely considered one of the most Instagrammable and spiritual experiences in Queensland tourism.
